Ordinary Ukrainians Take Up Arms to Defend Their Country From Russia Invasion!
Date: February 12, 2022
While anti-gun commentators routinely mock the idea that an armed U.S. populace would do much against a tyrannical government and all its military might, the general attitude towards Ukraine and mounting Russian aggression is quite different.
Images and stories have flooded mainstream media of everyday Ukrainian's training with rifles and whatever else they can get their hands on.
And instead of ridiculing these Ukrainian’s efforts to defend themselves, they are being given tacit applause with the acknowledgment that an asymmetrical war fought door-to-door is more likely to deter Russia’s ambitions than the outmatched Ukrainian military. Take Mariana Zhaglo for instance.
A 52-year-old market researcher and mother of three who lives in Kyiv, Zhaglo isn’t waiting around to see if the Russian military gathering at Ukraine’s border intends to invade. Having armed herself with a $1300 Zbroyar Z-15 carbine and tactical gear, she’s training.
And she’s not alone. Each weekend, volunteers known as Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Force, meet in sub-zero temperatures to carry out training drills supervised by former military officers. Attracting citizens with a wide range of ages and experience, the TDF is growing in numbers, and if called to action, would greatly complicate Russia’s bid to overtake the country.
For that reason, there are now calls for the U.S. to provide arms to Ukrainians in an effort to further dissuade Russia from invading. Where sanctions prove ineffective, guns work pretty well. Considering Russia’s past failures fighting against guerrilla warfare, such as in Afghanistan, this move may prove decisive.
Decisive and ironic, as the same U.S. government which some say should provide ordinary citizens of a foreign country with firearms to protect themselves, thinks the concept laughable within our borders. As Biden said in a recent address, “If you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15's and maybe some nuclear weapons.” Except, well, in Ukraine, where “a guerrilla war fought by dentists, coaches and housewives defending a hometown of a thousand basement shelters would be a nightmare for Russian military planners,” as stated in the Associated Press.
The fact remains: regardless of Russia’s superior firepower, wars are won on the ground. As said by Denys Dioin, a 27-year-old veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, “For Putin’s hold on power, it will be a fatal step, because our nation is ready to fight. From every bush, from every window, we will be shooting.”
Dioin’s rhetoric is not isolated. According to surveys taken by intelligence agencies, millions in Ukraine are willing to fight. So, what happens now, when ordinary Ukrainians continue arming themselves, training, and preparing to defend themselves? Will Russia, or any other tyrannical force, think twice about invading? Time will tell.
What is clear is that an armed people are a strong people, ready to defend themselves against hostile aggressors.
Why would we not want to be equally prepared here in the United States?
